Police Brutality against students

   DOWNLOAD PODCAST  Tonight we will discuss a case out of York, Pennsylvania where a 16 yr old female student says that police assaulted her after preventing her from calling her mother. The situation arose after the principle of Lindbergh Education Center suspended the girl for horseplay with a another student. The principle told the female student to leave the school grounds but she refused without being able to retrieve her personal property. The police were called and the female student found herself alone with the officers locked in a room and when she emerged she had a black eye.  We will be joined by Bro. Shareef Hameed and Bro. Amaju Bendele who are both from that area in Pennsylvania which is right outside of Philadelphia and both say there is a problem of police brutality in general and violence against students specifically. As the nation debates whether or not cops and/or security guards should posted in our schools to prevent violence, it is a shame that in some of the schools this violence is occurring against students.

Republican and former preacher Mike Huckabee and others are claiming the violence that occurred at Sandy Hook was because God was taken out of schools. Is this a legitimate argument and is their a spiritual side to be looked at?

Does the mother of the Sandy Hook murderer bare some responsibility for the incident since it was her guns that were used and should she have taught a person with mental issues and taking medication how to use firearms? Does this incident teach us common sense approaches to safe gun ownership?

Speaking of mental health issues, has the nation’s reaction collective action towards this tragedy reveal cultural racism? I think so, what about you. How has the nation collectively reacted to news of children being overseas by CIA and Pentagon drone strikes? Is the President going to have the CIA and Pentagon revise their standard operating procedure that currently says the killings of children and other innocent people in US drone strikes are acceptable costs of the "war on terror"?

What about questions about the mental health issues of police officers considering that they too have been killing children in the streets, in their homes, tazering them at their schools. Should cops along with gun owners be required to pass annual mental health screenings? Where is the collective sorrow for all these black people being shot and killed by cops and non-cops alike?

The nation is in shock today after a young man in his twenties killed his mother and then traveled to Sandy Hook Elementary school where he shot and killed twenty-seven people, which included twenty children, six adults. This shooting follows the mall shooting in Oregon, which followed the theater shooting in Colorado. However, I cannot help but notice that the same concern and grief is not shown to other victims of indiscriminate violence at the hands of Americans. I see no difference in the acts of violence carried out by lone gunmen or by those operating drone attacks upon civilians.

Brother Shareef Hameed joins me tonight to discuss this tragedy, the underlying issues and will give us a preview of his upcoming lecture at the North Carolina Central University in the Criminal Justice Bldg. The topics the lecture will cover are Marijuana, Crack, Cocaine, Alcohol, Ritalin and saving our youth from the Walking Dead.

He works in Department of Sociology & Anthropology at Concordia University and has a new book out titled "Slouching Towards Sirte: NATO's War on Libya and Africa". Killer Cleveland Cops shoot unarmed suspects 137 times

The city of Cleveland and the nation is in a uproar over the shooting of unarmed victims Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams last week. Cops claim they were shot at but no weapon was found in the vehicle the two were riding in. Cleveland cops fire over 137 times into the vehicle killing both. WYMS holding Morehouse tuition fundraiser for two students

Why You Mad Son LLC, an urban edutainment media company is holding a fundraiser for two students of Paul Robeson High School in NYC. Akeem Pearce, 18, and Jamaican-born Troy Ennis, 20, both grew up with out their parents but made it through high school and aspire to go to college. They created a video that went viral on Youtube which protested the conditions of their school and helped raise public awareness about the murder of Florida teen Trayvon Martin.

Kannapolis NC Family victimized by system of injustice

Afdal Azam Leach by all accounts is a gifted, intelligent caring young man who has been nothing but an asset to his community leading a productive life. However, his life would be turned upside down when an encounter with Kannapolis police resulted in the 19 yr old man being charged with possessing weapons of mass destruction, resisting arrest and the concealment of deadly weapons.

Veronza Bowers Jr. is a former member of the Black Panther Party and joined as a young man after he was inspired to help address the social ills affecting many Black and poor people. He would later be framed for the killing of a U.S. Park Ranger. He has served far past his original sentence of 30 years making him one of the longest held political prisoners. It is possible he could have been released earlier but refuses to lie just to get out and therefore has maintained his innocence. Bro. Veronza told one supporter, "I have been here for 35 years. If the only way I can get out is to lie and say I am guilty, then my whole life is a sham. I will rot here in prison before I will do that."

Revisiting the case of Robert Seth Hayes was active as a Black Panther party member and volunteered for many of its humanitarian programs in the community. We last spoke to his daughter Crystal Hayes but tonight will speak with his wife Mrs. Sheila Hayes. She joins us at the 30 minute mark.

I want to also examine the current social conditions and compare them to the social conditions that inspired Mr. Hayes in his youth to do something to help improve the plight of Black people during the sixties and seventies.

Many law enforcement agencies systematically oppose the release of all political prisoners like Robert Seth Hayes. People incarcerated for resisting racism and oppression of Jim Crow throughout the nation.

Like many of the millions of people incarcerated on one of America's prison plantation, medical care is neglectful or non-existence and takes lots of effort and pressure from family and lawyers to get these medical needs met. Mr. Hayes has Type II diabetes and Hepatitis C and has recently been extremely ill so we hope to get an update about his current state of health.

Mr. Hayes has been a model citizen despite the conditions and environment He participates in various civic activities and served as a pre-release advisor. What possible reason could there be other than political oppression for the continued imprisonment of Mr. Robert Seth Hayes.

Demands for answers in death of 14 yr old Jason Smith persist

Tonight we will revisit the story involving 14 yr old Jason Smith whose family said he was murdered by racist people in the town of Eros, Louisiana last year and that his organs were possibly harvested. Officials are calling it a drowning but injuries to the body would suggest otherwise say advocates for the family. Murder for Organs scheme revealed in New York City

The New York Organ Donor Network is being accused of bullying doctors into declaring people brain dead who were not so that their organs could be harvested. Whistleblower Patrick McMahon says that one out of five people showing brain activity are declared dead in the murder for organs scheme.

George BaBa Eng is a 64-year old father, grandfather, educator, writer, counselor, and mentor, who killed a man in 1977 for pulling a gun on his wife. He is a reformed offender, imprisoned in New York State for 36 years and is a prisoner of conscience who is determined to be an asset to his community. Baba has been consistently active in the academic and political education of his family, fellow prisoners, and himself. He has taught about Ancient Afrikan Civilizations, African American History, the Politics of Liberation, and the Life of the Prophet Muhammad. He has organized youth assistance programs and has served as chapter president of the NAACP. He has trained teachers’ aides and has held classes on racism and its effects on the values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of the people subjected to it. Baba has received numerous certificates and awards for his work, including the NAACP's prestigious Thalheimer Award for "exemplary program development." Baba is well known for his ideas regarding "restorative justice." In 2003, a scholarly paper he wrote on the subject was accepted for presentation at a national conference on criminal injustice by the Department of Africana Studies at Columbia University.

As w/political prisoners who are tormented for having fought against the system outside the prison walls, George BaBa Eng is a prisoner of conscience who withstands many of the same torments for coming to consciousness and exposing and fighting this system from behind the walls. He is currently confined at South Woods State Prison in Bridgeton, NJ.

June 2011 BaBa had brain surgery, something he had been trying to avoid while incarcerated. Recovery has been slow but he is doing well. He will go before the NJ Parole Board in the Spring of 2013. Despite his confinement, he is on the board of Prisoners Are People Too, Inc. He is Program Director.
